First, let’s be clear that this was posted in a California based human resources group. While I am employment law trained in multiple states as well as Canada, one things is for sure. It is an illegal practice to pay employee’s late – – – especially in the State of California. I have so many questions for the individual who posted this.
1. Why did you agree to this? 2. What is your alternative? 3. Do you understand the fines and penalties for late payments to employees? 4. How do you allow the payroll company to make you violate your own policy (remember pay dates are listed in the company handbook).
Goodness! I don’t even know where to begin with this one. But here we go…..
But first, can you believe the domain www.MindTheBusinessThatPaysYou.com was available? Me neither, but here we are! Thank you so much for stopping by this website. Thank you so much for your interest in my latest project. The idea for this book was not expected AT ALL! However, as I was taking some time to heal from “a few” life altering events, specifically the passing of my beautiful mother who succumbed to COVID on August 16, 2020; life has a way of putting things into their proper perspective. It’s still a shock that she is gone because one month prior, my mom was at my home for a week just being my mom. So let me share a quick story about our last time together and how it relates to this project.
As I shared above my mom had spent a week at our home one month before her passing. While there, my brother was getting ready for his birthday party and my mom was about to call him with some unpleasant news of someone passing away. She mentioned it, so I gave my opinion about it. I told my mom, “why would you ruin his day with that bad news, you can tell him that later!” My mom knew I was right, but she was not going to admit it. Consequently, she would figure out how to have the last word about it. (To bring this full circle, she had just finished telling me that I wasn’t going to be 50 this year and I said, “mother, maybe your calculator works better than your memory!” So you have to know my Mom was on a mission to be right about something.
While my mother didn’t call my brother with the bad news, she wasn’t just going to let it go. As she put her phone down she said, “Mind The Business That Pays You!” I torted back with, “well lady, if that’s all the business you have, then you need to buy you some!” We laughed hysterically in that moment. While I’m sure we were laughing about 2 different things (If I had to guess, she was laughing at my clap back. If I had to guess, I was laughing because she refused to admit it was bad timing). It is a moment I will never forget because it was the last time I laughed about absolutely nothing with my mother.
I’m also reminded of when I wrote my first book, Why Should I Hire You? in 2006 and my mom told me that I wrote that book BECAUSE she wrote papers in college. I didn’t have the heart to tell her, that everyone wrote papers in college and if she wanted to take credit for it, (even though she has never worked a day in human resources), that so be it. That’s her prerogative as my mother. While my mother was NOT the reason, I wrote my first book, I can say; she is definitely a part of this book and she is 100% responsible for it’s title.
How this relates…..
There are many times in human resources where we have a tendency to react to things that have absolutely no direct connection to our job function. Just because we have access to information, it doesn’t always require a response. Prior to my mother’s passing, I had no desire to write a book at this time. As with the passing of my mother, often our plans are altered by real life. During my down time, I spent more time than usual on social media and found myself in many of my human resources group fully present. Normally, I pop in and out because my time is limited. I was reading some of the post thinking (and sometimes responding with) “Wow, post like this are the reason people don’t like HR”, “Chile that is not your tea to sip” and even, “what does this have to do with your role as a human resources practitioner?” I will openly admit, I even found myself saying, (but not posting), “who in the world hired you to do HR?” Now don’t misunderstand me or the intent of this project. This book is NOT an open rebuke to any of my colleagues. It is however a reminder that as human resource PROFESSIONALS, we are influencers in the workplace (or we should be). With that being said, sometimes we have to hold one another accountable. This is one of those times (at least in my professional opinion, anyway!)
So why is December 9, 2020, the release date?
Simply put it’s my 50th birthday!!!!!
Simply put, it’s my 50th birthday. And I want this to be a memorable day to celebrate an awesome milestone. A new journey in life. A recovery period. A new outlook on what matters and why. It’s all a matter of what business I decide to mind. If you have ever been blessed, educated, inspired, or just learned a little something along the way through my career endeavors, I invite you to help me celebrate, not just me…..but my new project. It’s amazing time to reflect and re-set. It’s an amazing time to let go of “self-stressing activity” in the workplace. It’s an amazing time to see life through a new lens. It’s an amazing time to simply, MIND THE BUSINESS THAT PAYS YOU!
It’s my 50th Birthday! and there are 5 things I plan to do to commemorate this milestone.
1. Wake up in The City of Angels (Los Angeles, California is one of my favorite cities) 2. Hang out with my best friend of 30+ years (who is traveling in along with others to celebrate me) 3. Eat seafood for breakfast, lunch and dinner (because that is also my favorite). 4. Travel to Honolulu, Hawaii (yep, that’s where I’m falling asleep that night). 5. Release my 20th book!!!!!!!! – YEP, it entitled, MIND THE BUSINESS THAT PAYS YOU!
If you would like to pre-order you are more than invited to do so!
It’s a real struggle for me when I see these kind of questions posted in Human Resources groups…..BY HR PROFESSIONALS. The answer to this question is not found in a social media group on Facebook. The answer to this question is found in the Employee handbook. After doing a little research on the poster, I discovered the poster works for a private company. Which means, the benefits offered are subject to the employers discretion. A properly written handbook will clearly define the differences between full-time and part-time employees as well as the benefits or lack of that would be provided based on the employee status. In “most” companies, a full time employee is defined as one who works at least 30 hours a week. The handbook will also state in “most” employment sectors that ONLY FULL TIME EMPLOYEES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS. The only “resource” this HR Professional needed to show this employee is the employee handbook. If orientation was properly completed during on-boarding, this HR Professional should have also had the employee sign and acknowledge that they understand the policies in the associate handbook!
If your organization, would like an audit of your employee handbook, please contact the offices of Stephanie C. Harper. We would be happy to help you and your HR Team fully understand the policies created and how to best communicate them to your employees.
The Why You Need HR Blog! is an extension of the Mind The Business That Pays You book. Its intended purpose is to share “a day in the life” of a human resources practitioners. Hopefully this blog will help you to better appreciate the HR professionals in your organization. To protect the poster and the integrity of the social groups, all personal information has been removed.
